Journey to Leadership

Professor Kosgey assumed office on March 21, 2018, succeeding Professor Laban Ayiro, who served as the acting Vice-Chancellor from September 2016. Ayiro's appointment was made by then Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, following the retirement of Professor Richard Kiprono Mibey, who had diligently served the University for 10 years.

Before his appointment at Moi University, Professor Kosgey was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Laikipia University. His ascension to the Vice-Chancellor position at Moi University was marked by a competitive selection process conducted by the Moi University Council, in which he emerged victorious over Professor Ayiro. However, there were allegations of bribery that tainted the process, leading to the initial nullification of the results by then CS Matiang'i.

The controversy surrounding the appointment of the Moi University Vice-Chancellor even took a political turn. In September 2016, Governors Jackson Mandago (Uasin Gishu) and Alex Tolgos (Elgeyo Marakwet) led a section of MPs in a protest at the University, demanding Kosgey's appointment. Professor Kosgey was eventually confirmed in his role.
