Background History
Moi University was established in 1984 following recommendations by the presidential working party on education (the Mackay Commission) chaired by Canadian educationist Dr. Colin B. Mackay. President Daniel Moi became the varsity's first chancellor.


Overview
Moi University is ranked the second largest university in Kenya after University of Nairobi (UoN). Moi University boasts close to 50,000 students pursuing 232 on campus and off campus diploma, degree, masters and PhD courses.

❓DID YOU KNOW❔: Moi University is the ONLY institution of higher learning in Kenya which started off as a university, unlike others which began as colleges before transitioning to universities. Moi University has given birth to Maseno University, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), Maasai Mara University (MMaraU), University of Kabianga (UoK), University of Eldoret (UoE), Karatina University, Garissa University, Rongo University, Alupe University and Chepkoilel University College. Currently, Moi University has one constituent college, Bomet University College (BUC).

Location

Moi University Main Campus is located in Kesses, Uasin Gishu County. It will take you approximately 35 kilometers from Eldoret town, and 310 kilometers from Nairobi to get to the main campus.

Campuses
Moi University initially had 7 campuses: Main Campus, (Eldoret) Town Campus, Eldoret West Campus, Odera Akang'o Campus, Nairobi Campus, Kitale Campus and Coast Campus (Mombasa).
However, following a restructure in 2021, the varsity currently have: Main Campus, Eldoret Town Campus (CHS), Annex Campus (Eldoret), Nairobi Campus and Coast Campus (Mombasa).

●Eldoret Town Campus hosts the College of Health Sciences(CHS) near Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH). All students pursuing courses related to Medicine, Nursing & Midwifery and Dentistry are admitted at the Eldoret Town Campus

●Annex Campus (located in the outskirts of Eldoret town) hosts School of Law, School of Tourism, School of Hospitality and Events  Management and School of Business and Economics.

Additionally, the University has three (3) Institutes namely:
•Gender, Diversity & Peace Studies
•Open, Distance & e-Learning
•Confucius Institute.
 It also has a Biomedical Informatics Centre.

Centres of Excellence
Moi University takes pride in its Centres of Excellence in the various fields, namely;
•Centre of East and South African-German Centre of Excellence for Educational Research Methodologies and Management (CERM-ESA)
•Centre of Excellence in Phytochemicals, Textile and Renewable Energy (ACE II-PTRE)
•Cluster Centre of Excellence in African Studies (ACC).
The University is envisioning to be a Centre of Excellence in Aerospace Studies, Information Communication Technology and Arabic Studies.

Moi University owns Rivatex East Africa Limited, a textile manufacturing factory in Eldoret and Innovation Firm Limited – another business arm of the University.
This makes Moi the only University running a factory for teaching and production in the region.

Moi University also offers Aviation courses supported by three aircrafts FULLY owned and operated by the University, the only one of its kind in Africa.
